The John Cockerill Foundation is supporting Brightside Project in the development of the Spark Initiative, a program designed to help children and young people in Ohio discover their talents, interests, and new possibilities for the future. This commitment is coming to life in particular through the “Spark Bus,” with the active involvement of colleagues from John Cockerill Industry North America.
In Salem, Ohio, the John Cockerill Foundation is partnering with Brightside Project, a local organization dedicated to supporting children and young people from underserved communities.
This new partnership is built around a shared ambition: to ensure that every young person, regardless of their circumstances, has access to meaningful experiences, mentors, and opportunities that can help them discover what inspires them and look to the future with confidence.
$85,000 in support to bring the “Spark Bus” to life
As part of this partnership, the John Cockerill Foundation is providing $85,000 in financial support to Brightside Project to help advance its Spark Initiative.
One of the initiative’s flagship projects is the Spark Bus: a former school bus that will be transformed into a mobile space for learning and discovery.
Once completed, the vehicle will enable Brightside Project to reach children directly in communities across Columbiana County and rural areas of Mahoning County. Designed as a mobile classroom and hands-on learning lab, the Spark Bus will offer practical experiences in science, technology, engineering, and the skilled trades, as well as opportunities for young people to connect with professionals and mentors.
The Spark Bus is expected to hit the road in 2027.
More than financial support
The John Cockerill Foundation’s commitment goes beyond funding the project. It also reflects a key dimension of the Foundation’s work: engaging John Cockerill colleagues.
In the United States, employees of John Cockerill Industry North America will contribute their skills and expertise to the project, including helping transform and outfit the Spark Bus.
They will also have opportunities to serve as mentors, sharing their professional experience, knowledge, and passion for careers in industry with the young people supported by Brightside Project.
Through this involvement, children will gain firsthand exposure to career fields they might not otherwise have the opportunity to explore, including engineering, manufacturing, welding, electrical work, robotics, and other skilled trades.
