Lar Abdon Batista supports vulnerable children towards social inclusion and equal opportunities

2025, Brazil

Founded in 1911, Lar Abdon Batista is a non-profit supporting vulnerable children and adolescents (0–18) referred by the courts or guardianship council. It provides temporary accommodation, personalised care, and educational and emotional support across four specialised homes with playgrounds, activity rooms, and sports fields. Aligned with the UN SDGs, especially SDG 10 on reducing inequalities, the institution fosters inclusion and equal opportunities. Its partnership with the John Cockerill Foundation, including an accessible lift system, highlights its commitment to a safe, inclusive environment that promotes independence.

01. No poverty
03. Good health and well-being
10. Reduced inequalities

With a focus on individualised care, Lar Abdon Batista promotes the inclusion of children and adolescents from disadvantaged backgrounds or facing vulnerable situations. The organisation works to ensure that everyone has access to quality education, appropriate care and a safe environment, thereby helping to break the cycle of social exclusion and offer new prospects. The educational teams are also committed to raising awareness among young people about tolerance, respect for differences and solidarity, values that are essential for building a more just and equitable society.

The institution has four individualised houses, each accommodating ten young people, giving a total capacity of 40 children and adolescents. The facilities include playgrounds, activity rooms, a multipurpose area, a sports field and common areas, enabling the organisation to meet the varied needs of young people while promoting their personal development and social integration. Through its work, the non-profit organisation actively contributes to the achievement of the UN’s goals of reducing inequality and promoting inclusion for all.

The John Cockerill Foundation’s partnership with the Lar Abdon Batista association is one of three projects set up as part of Véronique’s mission at the end of 2024. It demonstrates a shared commitment to the inclusion and independence of vulnerable children and young people. Together, we have launched a project to install a lift system in the home, allowing each young person to move around freely and have full access to all areas.

The progress of the work, supported by close collaboration with our local partners and coordinated by Cristina, a John Cockerill Group employee, illustrates the power of collective effort. Beyond the technical dimension, this project has a real social ambition: to offer a more suitable environment, open up new perspectives and guarantee respect for everyone’s dignity. It is thanks to the determination and involvement of everyone that this project is becoming a reality, demonstrating that cooperation is the driving force behind change and inclusion.
