In Madagascar, a Renewed Commitment to Education, Water and Hygiene

2026 Madagascar

Since 1990, the volunteer-run Alsatian nonprofit Partage & Solidarité has worked to uphold children’s fundamental rights in Madagascar. In the Port Bergé district, particularly in the remote village of Anjiamanera, access to education remains a major challenge. Extreme poverty and a lack of adequate school infrastructure still prevent many children from attending school regularly. To address this critical need, the nonprofit has once again joined forces with the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Port Bergé to build a new school.

01. No poverty
04. Quality education
06. Clean water and sanitation
10. Reduced inequalities
11. Sustainable cities and communities

This project builds on a successful initial partnership. In 2022–2023, the John Cockerill Foundation supported the nonprofit by co-funding a medical clinic in Port Bergé that operates independently with its own water and electricity supply. Building on this experience, the Foundation is renewing its commitment. Its involvement goes beyond financial support: it reflects the Foundation’s mission of solidarity and its blended engagement model, combining funding with technical expertise. Specifically, the Foundation is helping secure access to water and sanitation by drilling a borehole to draw groundwater and supply the school site, as well as by building an accessible sanitation block that will include two showers.

From the day the school opens, this essential infrastructure will provide nearly 150 students and their teachers with safer, more dignified hygiene and health conditions. The project also anticipates the site’s future needs: the school cafeteria, scheduled for construction next year, will also benefit from the drinking water and sanitation facilities being installed today. By supporting this sustainable initiative, the John Cockerill Foundation reaffirms its commitment to helping vulnerable communities achieve greater self-reliance and build brighter futures.
